More about BMHW
Black Maternal Health Week is an annual national campaign held from April 11-17 to raise awareness about the disparities in maternal health outcomes among Black women in the United States.
Purpose:
- Highlight the racial disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity rates among Black women.
- Advocate for policies and programs to improve Black maternal health outcomes.
- Educate the public about the factors contributing to these disparities and empower Black women to access quality healthcare.
Key Facts:
- Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women.
- The maternal mortality rate for Black women in the United States is 69.9 per 100,000 live births, compared to 26.6 per 100,000 live births for white women.
- Structural racism, systemic bias, and lack of access to quality healthcare are major contributors to these disparities.
