Understanding Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can live on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours, making rapid prevention and containment critical.

Symptoms of Measles
Measles symptoms typically appear 11–12 days after exposure and may include:
- High fever (up to 105°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- A blotchy red or brownish rash, starting on the face and spreading to the body
Measles can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia, brain infection (encephalitis), and even death—especially in infants, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Prevention: The Measles Vaccine
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is the most effective way to prevent measles.

- Second dose: 4-6 years old
Vaccine Effectiveness
- One dose: 95% effective
- Two doses: 97-99% effective
For more information about measles symptoms and prevention, view this flyer from the Texas Pediatric Society.
What if my child is too young for the vaccine?
Infants under 12 months rely on high community vaccination rates for protection. If traveling to an area with a measles outbreak, or if we do have a true outbreak in our community, consult your doctor about early vaccination for your infant (down to 6 months old) or other family members.
Not sure if you’re vaccinated?
There is no risk in getting an extra dose. If you’re unsure, check with your healthcare provider.

What to Do If You Suspect Measles
Before visiting Waco Family Medicine:
- Call ahead if you or your child have fever, rash, or other measles symptoms.
- Do not enter the clinic immediately—stay in your car or wait outside the building and call the front desk for guidance.
- Wear a medical mask to prevent spread.
- Suspected cases may be evaluated in an isolated exam room or even outside to reduce exposure risk.
Testing for Measles
Waco Family Medicine offers measles testing through a simple throat swab or blood test. Results typically take 3-7 days.
